Website chat widget
Also called: Live chat · Chat widget · Web chat
A website chat widget is a small chat window embedded on a website that lets visitors message a business in real time while the team answers from its own tool.
Most widgets are added by pasting a short script into the site’s pages, usually just before the closing </body> tag. The script shows a button in a corner of the page, and conversations go to the business’s inbox.
Two details matter for security. The widget should run only on the business’s own websites, so nobody else can embed it, and signed-in customers should be identified with a signature made on the server, usually an HMAC, rather than a name the browser could fake.
Website chat has no app on the visitor’s side. Once they close the tab, the team may not reach them again unless they left contact details.
